Longtime fan and fellow guitarist. First of all, thanks for many years of listening pleasure! I read with great interest your comments about which guitars you prefer and why. I know you're not a Fender guy but you need to check out a G&L guitar. (G&L is the company Leo Fender formed after leaving Fender.) IMHO, they are better Fenders than Fenders, both in tone and feel. Especially check out an ASAT sometime. Seriously--you may just change you mind about your favorite guitar! (No, I'm not a G&L sales rep--just a deliriously happy former-Fender-lover who now plays an ASAT Classic.)

So there I was pumping iron with the best of them in the gym after Xmas. I was just about to get really sick of another Spandau Ballet or Blondie track coming over the loudspeakers when what should come on but a funky version of "games People Play" by APP. My favourite Ian Bairnson solo actually unfortunately though the heathens missed it out. Still I was so pumped up that I shouted "Scabies" at the top of my voice and ran out fists high shouting "Bring back the Bairn" I've been banned now but so what There's always another gym but there's only one Ian Bairnson

I've just listen your new solo for the cover of Eye In The Sky. I've heard rumours about this version, but I couldn't belive that you really have recorded it for an unknown argentine rock group. I like this new solo, I like the version, but the original remains the best. Mr. Bairson your are an excelent guitar player, and now I know your are a better human being for doing it. Hi Ian. First, ditto on Steve's comments re the phone call! I wish to add a few words about our "Name That Tune" night that *you* made possible :) What a treasure! You were right, too. Even on the ones we got right off (not many, although we eventually got them all except "There But For The Grace of God")there were collective "#$%^ of course!"s going round. It was great fun and I know I speak for everyone when I say *thank you* for the time and energy you put into giving us such a enjoyable evening. Take care, my friend. I look forward to hearing some good Junk from you (yes, pun intended;). Best wishes! Ian Parsons

Salutations! Just wanted to stop by and place my vote for one of the greatest guitarists of our day. I was having a discussion with a number of musically-inclined friends, about phenominal guitarists, and, unfortunately, not a one of them had heard of you. Of course, I'm in the process of doing what I can to rectify such an oversight. I'm an avid Parsons fan, but now that I see you've been involved with other recording artists, I might end up with a few seemingly odd records in my collection! Thank you for loving music; it shows.

Greetings Ian, I remember the first time I heard "Magic." I thought, "Anyone can come up with one good solo!" Then I bought the first Pilot album and thought, "This is what George Harrison would like to be." No disrespect to George, I still love him. Your solos are always just the right thing for the song. That was always George's strength, in my opinion. However, you have much greater technical skills and so are able to do so much more. Everything is so melodic and smooth. I was sad when Pilot quit recording but the APP gave me a chance to continue to listen to you and David and that was great. All the best to you as you continue in your carrer, Jim Patton, Lindale, Texas, USA

Hi Ian, I've been listening to APP music for 25 years now and when we met here in Milano after the show in 1998 I am afraid I didn't manage to express all my gratitude to you and the other guys. But I remember I could tell you what a great player you are and it is such a pity that Alan has moved to the USA and decided to change his lineup. In any case: I hope I'll be able to hear your music live and maybe shake hands again in the future! Regards, Paolo

Hello Ian, I'm a guitarplayer from germany and i am a freakin fan of your guitar tone ..especially on Projects "Prime Time". This had a great influence to me. I want to ask you what kind of 50 Watt Marshall amp you use or is the recording on Ammonia Avenue made with the Boogie IIB? I'm a proud user (for 14 years!!) of a modded Fender The Twin (running on 15 watts and cranked a little with Vintage 30 Speakers) and am really satisfied with it. The only thing is, I'm searching for a long long time for such a tone-color you have on this recordings. I tried several Marshalls, Boogie Studio, Riveras, other Fenders, Engl and more but the only thing comes a bit close is a Hughes&Kettner MetalMaster (Shredmaster in America) - preamp. Live it's not that good but usable. Please give some answer. I would thank you so much. Regards and have a good time, Harry

Been a fan of yours via APP long before I knew your name. The sound is definitely in the fingers. Being a guitar player with my own studio, I have been producing with a strong APP/IB influence in my work. Let's hear a solo album from you soon. We played Siren song at our wedding as our first dance as a married couple and are now working up a version to perform live. You are an excellent composer as well as guitarist and I belive that you could carry on the APP concept just fine as you proved with Time Machine and ON Air. Tasteful music and tasteful guitar playing are a great combination. If you have an opportunity, please check out our music at http://home.columbus.rr.com/threeemusic/music/ There are also links there to other web sites containing our music. Hi Dick The Strat problem I have is the closeness of the strings to the body and the pickups. I have quite long fingers and get too much contact with the scratchplate on Strats. I also prefer bigger frets and don't like the feel of varnished maple fingerboards too! Just a personal opinion of course ... there are enough Strat players out there to prove I am in the minority. Best regards Ian

A real thrill to find this site via the "avenue" which Ive also just discovered - and hence several new (to me) albums youve been associated with - incl 3 A/P albums. That may sound a tad backward but living in Australia is not the best place to get non-mainstream music. A/P stuff has not been properly released here since Gaudi!!! the occas "hits" cd gets a push & thats about it. So thanx to the above named sites Ive recently had the pleasure of hearing lots of great new tunes which you either played on &/or wrote. Im WRAPPED. Congrats on so much fab music and great composing. The Cds u played a part in take pride of place in my collection and have given me many many hours of listening pleasure. (Plus Amazon.com have a new customer buying CDs that I just cant get here!!!!)

This is already old news, but I waited 20+ years to see Alan Parsons Project live, and finally did in Phila., a few years back at a YMHA, no less. Ian, as usual, you and the band were absolutely fantastic-well worth the wait! "The Very Last Time" (from "The Time Machine") in my estimation, may be the most beautiful, bittersweet song ever written by anyone. Pardon my ignorance, but it was dedicated to Gemma-I don't know who that was in your life, but she had to be truly special to elicit such a beautiful song. Mr.Bairnson, you are truly blessed.

Best wishes for your 50th birthday, Mr. Bairnson! I also want to say thank you for the great music - I've always loved your guitar and saxophone playing as well as your compositions ("On Air" being my favourite-album-of-all-times). Hello Ian, Well, here's a tribute from a 60-year-old (going on 18!) admirer of your considerable talent. Thanks for the music Ian - the older I get the more I appreciate it. Through my life (UK, Australia, NZ and now Spain) here and there a guitar-player stopped me in my tracks. First Scotty, then Cliff Gallup who just blew me away with his octave and double-stopping work in "Gonna Back up Baby" and "Race With the Devil", James Burton, Chet of course, and a few others - but not many. Then as I heard more APP over the years I found the tracks I played over and over were those in which your guitar featured most. I was stunned not just by your technical mastery of the instrument (the perfect phrasing and pitch) but by the inventiveness, the emotional intelligence in everything you play. I realised these were not just solos - they were virtual arrangements around which the whole piece seemed to hang. Your solo and background work seemed to define the essence of the piece. So yes, I am personally grateful for your site inasmuch as you have made yourself accessible to us. But for me its "thanks for the music" and the wonder of what you do with that guitar. All the best for the future. Gareth W.

Greetings Ian - you signed one of my Pilot albums backstage after an APP concert in Milwaukee 1997 or so. Sorry you and Alan aren't doing big tours anymore - the concerts I saw ruled beyond compare. Your tone and savoir faire on what to play is top notch in my book. The Pilot stuff rules as well...maybe the Roy T.B. production is a little over the top - you and DP should go back and tweak Morin Heights. And I LIKED the handclaps!

Hello Ian, like many, I also have all of the Alan Parsons cd's. I became an APP fan in 1980, when a friend turned me on to "tales". Your songs "Siren song" and "dreamscape" on try anything once and "Ignorance is bliss" off Time Machine absolutely send me into a state of tranquility. Your guitar work shows the influence of David Gilmour....but he could never play the sax as beautifully! I am sorry to say that I have not heard any PILOT cd's but I plan on rectifying that in the future. Best regards.

Hi, Mr. Bairnson. You have been a constant inspiration in my life. I remember that when I was a boy , the first record i bought was "The turn of a friendly card".My favorite game those years was to wake up at night, put my headphones on , and in the middle of the night, to dream that I was you playing those amzing solos.20 year later, i´m a guitar sessionist in Spain, i´ve a good career, every summer go on tour, i have also an School of Music and a Record Studio...and i still thinking that all it´s your fault¡¡ Thanks, thanks, thanks...(and sorry for my english¡)Juancho.

Hi, Ian, I'm Javier from Richmond. Actually, I was born and lived my teenage years in Peru, which is the last possible country you may find an Alan Parsons Project fan. I love your guitar work, it's amazing, clean, perfect, pure and your great solo on "Standing on Higher Ground" from Gaudi inspired me to learn more techniques and scales. Yesterday I found a promo copy of Lenny Zakatek's self titled album. Some tunes are pretty good, but it lacks of the Woolfson-Parsons songwriting structures. What do you think about it? Anyway, I never met you or see any of your performances, but I've been listening to you since 1987, I own the entire Parsons collection and Pilot's first album, and your sound is outstanding and influential. At least it is for me. Stop the war in Iraq!

Hello Ian, from Germany. First I've to tell that I was very surprised to get a new Pilot album last week when David was in Cologne for a gig with Donnie Munro. Fantastic to get the 2's A Crowd songs on CD now. I would very much Like to have a Solo album of yours and a live album of Pilot (new recorded or from the archivs). There must be live stuff in the archivs of the BBC or your own, I suppose. I doubt very much if you remember me, but my friend Irene and I were two of your first fans when you played with East West. Whenever you were performing in Edinburgh we were there, The Place and Friscos are the two places that come to mind. I had never heard anyone playing a guitar like you and they are right to put you in the same category as Clapton, etc. I had told my husband about you and East West so it was great to read all about what you have been doing and to prove to him that you are as wonderful as I said you were. I am so glad to see that you have done so well. Moira

OK, Guys, You can no longer say that no one from Roadkill is buying the new CD :-) I heard it over the weekend, when my good friend Scott H. brougit to a friendly get-together of some local "Roadkillers" . I have one question for you, Ian: Why oh why didn't you put more stuff on there like the last "live" cut from 1975?? That was the funkiest, coolest jazz-fusion cut and it was, by far, the best of the whole CD, even with the pops and crackles at the end!! We *NEED* more of that stuff! Totally awesome!! Ian, I cought a Cliff Richard concert in Brighton back in May/June 1987. Stuart Tosh was the drummer that night, and a tall chap in a baseball cap was the lead guitarist. Was that you? If so, did you mean to make that mistake? No one else caught it but I saw you smirk?!?!? (If it was you)! By the way, your twin part harmony solos are an inspiration! My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

I've always thought the solo on Motor's Too Fast (1987 - James Reyne) is some of the tastiest guitar ever - like a bluesy Lukather. I wrongly assumed it was performed by James Reyne's touring guitarist at the time (Jeff Scott I think). I have had a revelation tonight.

This evening I have tried to pick out the solo on "You´re gonna get your fingers burned" and pretty much I have made it but i´m not really a 100% sure about it. Any help from out there? I admire your technique Ian. You seem to play by ear instead of learned chord arpeggios etc as heard from all these boring studio guitarists. :-) I am truly amazed. Sometimes I think to myself, does it require a supernatural help to have or achieve such a talent? Hmm.....

I really enjoy looking at this website. I've admired Ian's playing right from the early Pilot days and even managed to see them in concert at Guildford in 1975! The guitar sound was absolutely brilliant - Ian was playing his stunning Gibson Twin-Neck. I'll never forget that distinctive sound! So come on lads, let's have a Pilot reformation tour and album soon. Ian, David and Stuart back on the same stage together would be an event to savour!!

Hi Ian, I am a german fan and i like especially your work with John Townley. I like this record very much, but it was in bad condition over the years. Is it possible to get on cd, maybe also Townleys second LP "More than a dream"? I search the net but there is nothing to found about John Townley. Can you or someone of the webside visitors help me? Best wishes and geetings from germany. Michael Gora

Hi Ian!! You almost certainly won't remember, but we met at the backstage party at the AP gig at Shepherd's Bush a couple of years ago....I was the guy who said your playing made me want to throw my guitar out of the window...and you said "don't"! I just wanted to say that I haven't, and I'm still making (what I think is) good music..so thanks!!! Thanks for a great gig that night, and your music, and this website. Good luck and maybe we'll meet again one day!! Andy Briggs

I saw Ian play in town at the house of blues in 99 with the Alan Parsons project. I have waited so long to see him live. I was not dissapointed. Him and the drummer saved the show. Alan did not seem to be doing anything of any great value and actually put a bit of a damper on it with his incessant droning on about what the next song was, which album it was from, what the lyrics are about etc. I look forward to seeing the show again.

Hello Ian. Nice to see that you`re still going and feeling vital. I was a huge Pilot fan and loved the way that the band transcended pop and even forced big brothers to admit "Hey these blokes can play and have great tunes". Am debating whether to get out the old LP`s or buy the CD`s. What do you think? Oh and are there any other Pilot web sites I wonder? Love and Peace, good luck with all your work, Davy from Gateshead

Twice- you have come to Austin, Tx. with the Alan Parsons show. Twice- I have gotten " this close " to getting one of my C.D.'s signed by you! Maybe next time. Being a 30 year old musician, I find little good in modern music. You are without a doubt the most underrated guitarist around. You are the backbone of the APP.I've enjoyed your playing for years and hope you continue to work(as I'm sure, you hope to continue to work as well). You seem to cut loose more live, which I personally love. Can't wait for next time. David Pack of Ambrosia told me a month ago that they and Parsons Live may tour soon. That would be great. Anyway, I just thought I would say "thank you" for many great years of listening to many great works on the guitar. You've given me something to strive towards, and even though I'll never be as well accomplished as you, I know what perfection is!!!!!!Thank you and keep up the good work. And as Sean Connery's arm says---" SCOTLAND FOREVER " Respectfully, Brian J. I have been listening to Alan Parsons since the first "Project" album. And I have always said that Ian is "THEE" ket element of the distinctive Parsons sound. Ian is a player of great emotion, as well as obvoius technical expertise! I pretty much listen to Alan Parsons CD's while working at my computer. Ian Bairnson's guitar playing is AMAZING! He and Mark Knopfler are my favorite guitarists.

For several years already I am a modest but true strat-player. I am close with the guitar-character and my hands are familiar with the neck and the body. In fact the guitar became a part of me or should I say: I became part of the guitar. As much all that time I had a Les Paul, but for some reason there was no warm relationship between us. In fact I did'nt really like the sound ! And than I became familiar with the music of APP and Ian Bairnson. More and more, specialy in last 4 albums, I felt emotion by hearing Ian's subtle guitarplaying. This was a new feeling to me in my approach to guitarmusic: emotion... So finally I agree that a Les Paul sounds very good... But more...it sounds heavenly beautiful when played by Ian. When Ian plays,... any guitar sounds great! Thanks for the music Ian. I am very impressed with this web page. It gives broad scope of information and is very original in presentation. It is wonderful to know a bit of history of the path that led you to fame.

Hi there! Here's is a guy who listen and loved your guitarworks with Alan Parsons for many years. As I said to my brother when he asked me how the new A.P-album was - I told him "how can a album be bad when Ian Bairnson is playing?" ;-) Go on playing the way you do!! -and go on with this nice website! :-)
